The agreement of traffic lights

Do you hear the sound

of breaking glass and grinding steel

the moans of those

about to die?

Those are the sounds we hear

when we ignore the agreement of traffic lights.

Red and green are

pronouns of distinction:

we and them, me and you.

Look at the collisions that come

from the missing me,

the fissures when it’s you,

not I.

Yellow is in between trapezes

when the gesture moves from actor

to audience

lasting for never long enough

before landing in my heart

with a thud

the consequence

the result

the agreement

It’s not an opinion

it’s a demand

without room for nuance or

and our very lives depend up

pressing hard on the brake

or slamming the accelerator to the floor

and feeling the power of horses

before vanishing into what’s next.
